“‘BEYCHELLA:’ BEYONCE’S HOMECOMING TO A FUTURISTIC QUEER UTOPIAN” PUBLISHED IN SPRINKLE JOURNAL VOL. 14

Jolie Brownell’s first academic published piece. Abstract: Beyoncé’s 2018 Coachella performance and 2019 Homecoming film set the stage for a radical Black queer reimagining. Yet, how can Beyoncé—who is cis/straight—be located within a queer critique? In this paper, I argue that through a radical and political expansion of queer, the creative deployment of dis/identification, and the unapologetic expression of the erotic, Beyoncé performs an embodiment of queer of color critique. These creative gestures within “Beychella” invite viewers into a queer futuristic utopian and provide new creative modes to politically inhabit, resist, and reimagine interlocking systems of oppression. AGENCY - BLACK JOY & POETIC ELOQUENCE: SITTING DOWN WITH JOLIE BROWNELL

Last week we sat down with @joliebrownell to discuss activism, identity, her newest ebooks and more. Here’s a taste: “Studying in college I’ve learned a lot of cool new words and concepts, which is great, but at the same time I’ve learned just how inaccessible many of these words and concepts are. Not only in the costs of buying such resources, but also in the very language these resources are written in. I almost always need a dictionary when reading these “college level” texts, and while I appreciate this opportunity to learn, I realize this is not the reality for everyone. My hope and mission then, is to take what I’ve learned, process it for myself and then relay it back through poetry.” For the full interview, click on the link below.

YELLOW CO. FEATURE  - JOLIE BROWNELL

“Not good enough.” We all struggle with this. But is it just me, or does it seem that “not good enough” is hitting girls at a younger and younger age. I think I was around 8 or 9 years old when I started doubting myself and my appearance. Now I hear girls even younger than that wanting to be “thinner” or have “big boobs” when they get older. But besides this being completely insane, it’s understandable.
